Sir:-
With reference to your letter 27046/1901 of
the 9th ultimo relating to the appointment by the
United States Government of certain medical men as
advisers on quarantine and immigration matters to
the United States Consuls at various British Ports,
I am directed by the Marquess of Lansdowne to sug-
gest that the Governor of Hongkong should be in-
formed that although the officers in question are
not entitled to official recognition at the hands
of the British Government, and the functions they
perform are not enjoined by British Law, yet, in
the interests of international public health, His
Majesty's Government appreciate the usefulness of
such appointments.
